AFRICA travelling information


Within the 54 countries Africa has to offer, Egypt, Kenya and South Africa are some of the most well known. Egypt’s capital is Cairo, and a significant landmark would be the Pyramids of Giza. They’re 4000 year old pyramids that can be explored, and home to mummified pharaohs. When the Nile flooded, and the Egyptian farmers could not farm their land, the pyramids could almost be seen as a job-providing scheme. Kenya’s capital is Nairobi, and Nairobi National Park, set on the outskirts, is the only national park on earth that borders a capital city, yet the animals remain unperturbed. It’s a successful rhinoceros sanctuary, home to the largest concentration of black rhinoceros. Gazelles, warthogs, zebra, giraffes, ostriches and buffalos, lions, leopards hyenas and cheetahs can be seen there too. The capital of South Africa is Cape Town, and Table Mountain provides a place for the adventure seeker. Hike for three days, covering the summit and across the mountain top, and on the final day, explore the Back Table and descend to the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The Aerial Cableway is another option, going to the 1086m peak of the mountain, with breath taking views and frequent departures. Wildlife is an important part of Africa, and two examples of beautiful and rare animals are the Topi, and Bush Baby. The Topi is an herbivore, deer-like animal that mainly live on floodplains, with the largest populations being in Southern Sudan and Serengeti National Park. There an estimated 300,000 left, but Topis are extinct in six African countries. Bush Babies are native to more than twenty five African countries, and inhabit tree hollows in woodlands and bushlands. They have up to eighteen vocalisations, and are omnivorous animals.

Emperor Penguins are bigger than any other penguin, and can be distinguished by the yellow between their ears and upper breasts. They breed on the ice in the extreme cold and carry their eggs on their feet to prevent contact of the young and the ice. Their main source of food is fish that they catch from diving into the oceans, but squid is another popular favourite. Base Camp Plancius is a popular destination within Antarctica that provides the ability to do a variety of extreme activities. There is also the opportunities to get close to the colonies of penguins, as well as observing other wildlife.

Australia is home to Sydney, Brisbane and the Great Barrier Reef, each with different reasons for visiting. As the capital of England, London presents an array of exciting opportunities and has a rich history. Throughout Britain, there are many different ports that keep the isles so well connected to the rest of Europe, the largest is Southampton, and another popular one is Dover. Scotland harbours some of the significant expanses of wilderness left in the west of Europe, you can see golden eagles in the Highlands, see otters in the Outer Hebrides or go whale watching off the coast of Mull. The capital, Edinburgh, has also inspired all kinds of arts, from poetry, to novels, even to song due to its distinct characteristics. Although Stonehenge may seem unimpressive on first glances, it’s full of riveting history. It is an archaeology mystery, and despite many theories about the purpose of the site, the reality is that no one truthfully knows the original reason the site was constructed. In addition to the confusion as to why, the how aspect is just as much of a mystery. It is believed that the four tonne stones, came from the Welsh Mountains. Without machinery, this seems a near impossible feat. Stonehenge is sure to blow your mind with its’s secrets, so go and explore them.

The Niagara Falls are just an hour’s drive from Toronto, one of Canada’s most famous natural attractions, along with the Niagara Gorge, their power never fails to amaze. Able to get awesomely close, witness the force of the water that has been attracting people for centuries. The town of Whistler; a two hour drive from Vancouver, is a ski resort and village, which has always been important to the winter sports culture, and is versatile because it is used in summer for things such as hiking. The resort became internationally recognised in 2010 as one of the locations used for the Winter Olympics, and has world class facilities. If history is more up your street, why not visit the old area of Old Montreal. The town welcomes you with its historic buildings, superb shopping, food you’ll love and the kaleidoscope of culture . The atmosphere contrasts to Montreal itself, which is a bold, modern city, but Old Montreal has cherished landmarks, like Notre-Dame Basilica, that just could not be replaced. Toronto is an engineering marvel, the award-winning CN Tower is a must. Dining and entertainment are their specialities, and the impressive views are an added bonus, always seen thanks to the glass fronted elevators and glass floor panels. The new EdgeWalk is the world’s highest ‘hands-free’ walk, great for thrill seekers, however the CN Tower can also be a tamer family attractions, as it has a KidZone. Canadian Lynx are about the size of a large domestic, house cat, they can be found in forested areas, under fallen trees, rock ledges, or thick bushes, where they like to nest, in the northern part of North America and Canada. Seeing one is rare, but would be an extraordinary experience, as their numbers are declining, due to them being hunted by humans, for their thick, exquisite fur coats.

The seven Spanish islands that make up the Canary Islands are: La Gomera, La Palma, El Heirro, Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, and each are individual from the other. The archipelago is situated off the west coast of Morocco, and between them, the islands offer something to entice everyone. Relaxation is key, as the majority of the year, the weather is glorious, making it a pleasant change from the British weather. La Gomera’s National Park presents spectacular scenery, and Lanzarote’s lava fields are a colourful show. Central Park and The Statue of Liberty are perhaps two of the most famous places in New York City. The Statue of Liberty is most commonly recognised symbolising the ideals of opportunity and freedom. The statue took ten years to design in Paris, and then shipped to New York, where it was placed on an island in the harbour. It has a 16-stoey observatory deck, and it is now possible to go into the crown. Central Park was designed in the 19th century as a leisure place for all New Yorkers, regardless of colour, class or race. It is monumental, as it is such a large amount of land that has remained intact as its original purpose for so long, proving the peoples respect for this haven. Chicago is the town is focused largely on sports and teams, making its sense of community immense. The architecture is second to none, everyone can get involved, for example the Picasso statue that you can go up, touch and climb on. Millennium Park provides a key example of this amazing architecture, with Frank Gehry’s swooping silver band shell – a biconcave shape of mirror. Free concerts are also held in the park at lunchtimes and the evenings, which can be a family day out, or romantic date.
