Went on the colourful coasts last november. We were very apprehensive thinking it was going to be a bit like Butlins how wrong could we be excellent standards and no problems at al.
We have cruised with Thomsons, last year on the Red Sea,on the Celebration, and have also done two other cruises with them, although the boats are looking a little tired, they are clean, comfortable and food excellent. The only down side was in fact the age of the ships. Entertainment, so so, but we are not into it, so no problem to us.
Cabins were kept very clean, with a change of linen every other day.
We have also done Celebrity and MSC, but of course these are much younger ships so cannot be compared.
Cruised 10 times twice with Thompsons. Have to say out of all cruises their food would come on my lowest recommendation list. That said we have enjoyed good itinaries and have always had a good time. Went to the greek islands on the Emerald. The ship is VERY tired and could do with a re-fit. Went on the Spirit to the Red Sea. Food not brilliant although the speciality resturant was great - just heavily booked and could only go once. In my oppinion they just don't have the finer edge where food is concerned although if this is you first cruise you problably wouldn't be dissapointed. I wouldn't choose them again though.
We cruised on the spirit,in all fairness food is a very personal thing everyones tastes vary on how things should be cooked etc the cabin we had was kept spotless, believe me im worse to have around if anything is dirty.i always do a tissue test to see how clean things are and not one spot of dust was found .the staff were wonderful made us feel very special our waiter rommal could not do enough for us.all in all i did not pay for five star treatment but did receive it.
We have cruised on Thomsons Spirit and Destiny. Aged from 35 to 93 we have all had a great time and enjoyed the food especially afternoon tea. Although the ships are old they are ekpt clean and offer fair entertainment. If you want poor food then go on MSC's Poesia. There is veru little choice and you can guarantee it will be cold, even all soups. It is also limited to meal times - NO 24/7 on this ship. Nor do they have good arrangements for disabled even though they advertise cabins fot the disabled. For me this ship was the worst I have ever been on.

We have done two Costa, two Princess cruises and one on Discovery ...three on Thomson, (Emerald, Celebration and Spirit) and would highly recommend them for value for money. The evening theatre shows were by far the best we've seen...the restaurant food was also excellent on a par with Princess line. The ships are older but they are clean and comfortable and we found very spacious cabins (although I understand the Destiny has smaller cabins). Tips are included in the overall cruise cost and we have had absolutely no complaints about anything on the three we've done..in fact we will be off again on Calypso in June. At the end of the day each cruiser has different expectations of their cruise.
We are in our early sixties, are retired travel agents and have cruised a number of times. Yes the ships are a bit tired but not as bad as the QE2 in that respect. Entertainment is just as good, if not better, than on QE2. Value for money is even better than Thomson hotel holidays. We have cruised on the Spirit and the Celebration and would have no hesitation in going on either again.
