We also thought it was a ridiculous amount to tip. However, when we experienced the actual service we realised that it actually worked out very little (normally we tip 10% in restaurants in the UK). Don't even think about the amount people are being paid or not paid, think about the service you receive. For us it far surpassed any high street hotel or restaurant. We gladly subscribed to the set tip system and added another $200 to it on an individual basis with our waiter and housekeeper. As said before, if you feel you are getting bad service then complain and ask the office to refrain from adding tips to your on board account. Otherwise, I hope you have the same good experience we had and will gladly contribute.
This should be good fun. Fire away folks.
As most of the staff on cruise ships are from the Third World and their wages are not controlled by any legislation (no minimum wage for them!) their actual earnings are derisory. Tips are their real income which most remit to the Philipines, Thailand, India etc to support their families. I have cruised many times and have always found the service well worth tipping. Finally, I don't think the recommended levels of gratuities are excessive when compared to the ludicrous amounts people give to waiters, hairdressers etc in the UK and the USA for much less service.
I would happily pay a bit more on my cruise fare if I thought that the staff were paid a decent, living wage. It would be great if tipping could be eliminated but I fear that such a situation is unlikely to occur.
You don't if you wish you can opt out and pay whatever you like, but as someone else said have the balls to tell the person who will be putting in a 12 to 18 hour day cleaning up after you or serving you meals sorry your not getting any tip of me?
I totally agree with Miller of Hamstead. At 6 euros or 10 US dollars a day, I really don't feel that is excessive. If I were on a land based holiday, it would certainly cost me more than that just for the meals. I find it rare to find service as good on land as the crew provide so i don't grudge them a penny of it and often will give extra to those who have served me the most.
As QE2 isn't actually cruising any more can you expand on exactly what ship you do not intend to pay tips.......
